Navigate Author

The Layout tab includes the options for formatting and working with tables. The tab is a context based, so it is only displayed in the ribbon while you are working in a table. To display the tab click anywhere inside a table.

Toggles table gridlines on and off.

Lock Layout

Lock Layout

Locks the table layout so it is not accidentally resized. Select again to unlock table.

Delete Cells

Click Delete, then choose from Cells, Columns, Rows, or Tables from the sub menu.

Insert Above

Insert Above

Inserts a new row above the current row.

Insert Below

Insert Below

Inserts a new row below the current row.

Insert Left

Insert Left

Inserts a new row to the left of the current row.

Insert Right

Insert Right

Inserts a new row to the right of the current row.

Move Row Up or Down

Move Row Up or Down

Click Move, then choose Move Row Up or Move Row Down from the sub menu.

No Borders

None

Removes the border style from the table.

All Borders

Applies the border style to all cells in the table.

Outside Borders

Outer

Applies the border style to the outside borders of the table.

Shading

Shading

Select Shading, then choose the shading color from the sub menu.

Borders

Borders

Select Borders, then choose the border style attributes, including borders, weight, and line color from the sub menu.

Resize Row

Adjust Row Height

Use the Height selector to apply specific sizing to selected rows.

Resize Column

Adjust Column Width

Use the Width selector to apply specific sizing to selected columns.

Distribute Rows

Distribute Rows

Evenly distributes the height of selected rows.

Distribute Columns

Distribute Columns

Evenly distributes the width of selected columns.

Merge Cells

Merge Cells

Merges the selected cells into one cell.

Split Cells

Splits the selected cell into two cells.

Split Table

Splits the selected table into two tables.

Align Top

Align Top

Aligns the selected cell content to the top of the cell.

Align Center

Align Middle

Aligns the selected cell content to the middle of the cell.

Align-Bottom

Aligns the selected cell content to the bottom of the cell.

Text Direction

Text Direction

Changes the direction of the text in the selected cells. Repeated clicking moves you through the directions - left, down, and up.

Repeat Heading Rows

Repeat Heading Rows

Repeats the table's heading row when the table continues on a new page in the printed output.

Allow Row to Break

Allow Row Break

Allows the selected row to break across pages in the Word output.
