Font sizes can be specified using two measurement types - absolute or relative - and several measurement units. Absolute measurements are fixed while relative measurements are scalable.

  • Absolute measurements include: pt (points), pc (picas), xx-small, x-small, small, medium, large, x-large, and xx-large. Points and picas are written with a numerical value, for example 20pt (...and to put the two into context 1 point measures about 1/72 of an inch, 1 pica measures about 1/6 of an inch, and 12 points equal 1 pica).
  • Relative measurements include: px (pixels), smaller and larger (used in conjunction with a parent element, smaller and larger are relative to the size of the parent). Pixels are written with a numerical value, for example 20px.
