Update Author

Author-it Modules Installation & Update Guide

Author is the primary module for Author-it On-Premises. Update Author with each new release to ensure you have the latest features and bug fixes.

  1. Update Author on a single workstation, to see if a library upgrade is required.

When you update or upgrade Author, you may need to upgrade your Author-it library. We recommend checking if a library upgrade is required whenever you upgrade Author. Library upgrades are infrequent, but if one is required, not upgrading may prevent your authors from using Author.

    1. Log in to one of your workstations.

    2. Download the required installation files from the Author-it Community website:

      Desktop_Applications_20XX_RX.zip

    3. Close all other Windows programs.

This lets Author-it update essential components which are shared by other programs.

    4. Run Author-it.msi.

This updates Author on this workstation.

    5. On the same workstation, open Author-it Administrator and log in to the library.

Author-it Administrator tells you if a library upgrade is required.

    6. If a library upgrade is required, back up your library.

    7. Ensure all users are signed out of Author.

    8. Perform the library upgrade.

  2. Update Author on your remaining workstations.

As part of updating Author, your organisation needs to update Author on each of its workstations. Workstations that aren't updated may not be able to use Author.

This is straightforward and can be done by the person who uses the workstation, even if they have little technical knowledge. We recommend having someone with technical knowledge perform the rest of the update, then letting authors update their own workstations.

    Prerequisites

    1. Log in to the workstation you're updating.

    2. Download the required installation files from the Author-it Community website:

      Desktop_Applications_20XX_RX.zip

    3. Close all other Windows programs.

This lets Author-it update essential components which are shared by other programs.

    4. Run Author-it.msi

    5. On the Custom Setup screen, select Data > Entire feature will be unavailable

      Author Installer Custom Setup window

    6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

  3. Update Author plugins.

Plugins offer extra functionality for Author. We recommend updating your plugins whenever you update Author, to ensure compatibility.

    1. Download the required installation files from the Author-it Community website:

      Desktop_Applications_20XX_RX.zip

    2. Go to Desktop_Applications_20XX_RX > Plugins.

    3. Check if the folder contains your plugins. If your plugin is missing, contact the plugin supplier directly to see if an update is required.

    4. Close Author. If your environment uses library plugins, ensure all workstations close Author.

    5. Go the folder that contains your plugins.

The folder's location will depend on whether your workstations use library level plugins or user level plugins.

    6. Make a copy of each plugin folder that needs to be updated.

The plugins may contain customized configuration files. Creating a copy of the plugin folder ensures you can replace the plugin's default configuration files with the customized files, if required.

    7. Replace the contents of each plugin folder with the corresponding files from the new installation file.

    8. Replace the plugin folders' configuration files with the configuration files in the copied folders.

  4. Update Service Manager, if it's installed.

Author-it Service Manager is used to set up Author-it services, which are required for a number of Author-it applications and functions. Update Author-it Service Manager whenever you update Author, to ensure that they remain compatible.

    1. Log in to the application services server.

    2. Stop the Author-it Service by using the Windows Services tool.

    3. Download the required installation files from the Author-it Community website, unzip them, then open the unzipped folder.

The Service Manager installation file (Author-it Service.msi) is included in the same download as the Author installation files.

    4. Run Author-it Service.msi.

    5. Restart the Author-it Service by using the Windows Services tool.

    6. Repeat steps 1-5 on each of your application services servers.
