Preparing your installation environment - On Premises R2020

On-premises requirements, installation, and upgrade guide

Before installing Author-it, make sure you have met all the required prerequisites.

Note: Keep the database in the same physical network environment as the machines with the Author-it clients and Web Application server.

SQL Server Express is only for very small environments (<4 users). Max 1 socket/CPU/4 cores, 1 GB and 10 GB database supported. SQL Server Express has no limits on incoming connections or workload other than the CPU and memory limitations.

  • Create Active Directory domain administrator (aitservice) - this user runs your web applications.
  • Prepare application services server
    • Install .NET Framework 4.8.
    • Make sure you are able to add Windows Server Roles and Features.
    • Make sure the aitservice domain user must be in the local administrator group.
    • Make sure you have full administrative access to this server, or there is an administrator available during installation.
  • Prepare web applications server
    • Install .NET Framework 4.8.
    • Make sure you are able to add Windows Server Roles and Features.
    • Make sure the aitservice domain user must be in the local administrator group.
    • Create a share and give Change and Read access to Everyone. This is the starting point for the Author-it path. A dedicated drive on the web application server is common (D:\Data shared as Data, connection through \\(webservername)\Data). aitservice must be allowed to modify this share.
    • Disable UAC. For Windows Server 2012-2017 you must also disable this in registry or by policy.
    • Make sure you have full administrative access to this server, or there is an administrator available during installation.
  • Prepare your SQL Server - required if using a SQL library.
    • Set SQL Server to SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode.
    • Make sure the aitservice domain account is added as a user with serveradmin roles.
    • Create a dedicated SQL user account for connection purposes. The recommended username is ait. This account will be DBO for the Author-it databases.
    • Make sure you have full administrative access to this server, or there is an administrator available during installation.
  • Obtain a copy of your Author-itlicense file and activation key.
