On-premises requirements, installation, and upgrade guide

Install the Author-it client (and Administrator) on user environments and the Web Application server if using web applications. Installing the client on the Web Application server is optional but recommended as it makes it easier for you to test and troubleshoot.

  • To install the desktop client:

Note: Make sure your environments meet all prerequisites such as .Net 4.8 Framework.

  1. Download a copy of the latest client.
  2. Unzip the file (Desktop_Applications a temporary location.
  3. Double-click Author-it.msi. If prompted by anti-virus software or Windows, proceed anyway.

    This opens the Author-it setup wizard.

  4. Click Next.
  5. To proceed, accept the license agreement terms. Then click Next.

    You can modify the default installation location and conditions. If you choose to install the Data files, change the location to an unprotected folder such as C:\My Documents\Author-it Data\. Doing this allows Author-it to read and write to the Data folder independent of Windows settings or user permissions.

Note: By default, only the application is installed as this allows you to keep your existing data folder intact. The data folder contains sample libraries and templates provided by Author-it Software. If this is a fresh installation, and your company doesn't already have a template library or database, installing this using Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive provides a good starting point.

  1. Click Next.
  2. Click Install.
  3. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
