Linked images are added to the topic using the Insert Picture dialog box. When you base the File object on a Linked template the Image Source and File Path are updated with the fields from the template.

To insert a new linked image into a topic:

  1. Move the cursor to the point in the topic where the image will be added, click on the mouse to create the insertion point.
  2. Click the Insert/Edit Picture button on the Topic Toolbar to open the Insert Picture dialog box.
  3. Add the File object name in the Description field.
  4. Select one of the Linked File object templates from the Based on Template drop-down list. The form will refresh and display the File Path set in the template.

  5. Add the image's full file name.
  6. Click the Preview button to display the image in the preview pane.
  7. Click Create to add the image to the topic, and create the new File object in the library.

If you use the Linked URL images options you can access images stored on a webserver. When the Linked URL Picture Source is chosen, the Image Source field is updated to show Link to URL [http://...], and the URL pathway that has been assigned to the template. Add the image's file name to the File Name field and select the Preview button, when the image is located on the webserver the preview is displayed.

To insert a New Linked Image using the Linked URL option:

  1. Move the cursor to the point in the topic where the image will be added, click on the mouse to create the insertion point.
  2. Click the Insert/Edit Picture button on the Topic Toolbar to open the Insert Picture dialog box.
  3. Add the File object name in the Description field.
  4. Choose (none) in the Based on drop-down list and choose Link to URL (http://...) in the Picture Source drop-down list.

  5. In the File Path field add the full URL path to the image stored on the webserver. In the File Name field add the image's file name and format extension.
  6. Click the Preview button to ensure Contribute can access the image.
  7. Click Create to create the File object.

A copy of the linked image is downloaded from the webserver. The published output will link to the copy rather than the original webserver location.
