Both variant topics and variant books can be added to translation jobs. However, the release state assigned to objects is the final decider on which objects will be added to the translation job.
Topics
When you use variants with Translations, the following behaviors are applied to the topics in the translation job:
- An exact match is found: when an exact match is found for the variant criteria values, that topic is added to the translation job if it is in the correct release state.
(If the primary object is also in the translation release state then it is also sent for translation, unless you selected the Exclude Primary Objects checkbox.)
- An exact match is not found, but the variant criteria uses a fall-back structure: when an exact match cannot be found the variant rules are used to check for an alternative topic. (Note, the filtering matches the book filtering in Author so you can use the book filter to check which topics will be used.)
If you are using fall-back paths and an alternative topic is found, then the alternative is added to the translation job if it is in the correct release state.
(If the primary object is also in the translation release state then it is also sent for translation, unless you selected the Exclude Primary Objects checkbox.)
- An exact match is not found, and the variant criteria uses a flat structure: when an exact match is not found then the primary object is added to the translation job if it is in the correct release state.
Books
The same behaviors are applied to variant book objects.
Variant books are used if you need to change the structure of the book's contents.
