Rules & behavior when re-importing word files

Import content

Word files can be re-imported using the same actions for re-importing HTML source files. When working with Word files the following rules and behaviors apply:

Mailto hyperlinks

When re-importing Word files, mailto hyperlinks are mapped to the "Invalid Import Links" object.

To update the links, open each topic that uses the "Invalid Import Links" object, then create a new Hyperlink object in the topic, or you can reuse an existing Hyperlink object.

To quickly find all topics that need updating, locate the "Invalid Import Links" object, then right-click and choose Show Relationships to show a complete list of associated topics.

External URL hyperlinks

When re-importing Word files, external URL hyperlinks are created for each import.

Select one of the Hyperlink objects then reuse that object in all topics that should point to the same external URL. You can then delete any unused Hyperlink objects from the library.

Embedded images

When re-importing the Word files, File object names can be appended with a sequence number (identifying the image's location in the topic). This occurs when a topic contains several images and the importing profile uses the topic's heading to name the File objects.

In this case you might see something like X1000, X1000 (2), and X1000 (3) when you view the File objects created by the import. When you re-import the Word files the number appended to the topic heading in the File object's name can change, so as a result X1000 (2) may become X1000 (4).
