Most external files that you insert into your document are graphics. Author and Contribute use the File object to store details about the graphic. When you create a File object, choose an object template to base it on. There are a few issues to consider when working with graphics that will influence your choices.
Use the standard templates that come with the default library, or create your own templates. Either way, it helps if you understand what the standard templates do. This topic describes the default behavior of the standard temlates.
If your library has been customized, the behavior may be different than described.
To understand their behavior, check the properties of File objects. Or, create your own File object templates for specific purposes. See Inspecting File Object Properties.
All File templates default to 100% scaling in all output formats, so you may need to either:
- Modify the scaling in the File object templates.
- Create another File object template based on the standard template, but with a scaling factor specified. For example, 60% or 80% for Word but 100% for Web.
Note: Resize or scale your graphics by using an image editor or program for online outputs. Graphics scale successfully when publishing to Word.
Embedded GIF or JPEG
Use the templates for graphics by using the GIF or JPEG formats when embedding the images; embedding copies the image files to the database.
Use this template for small graphics when embedding the image.
Use this template for graphics using the GIF or JPEG files whose source files you're linking to, rather than embedding.
Use this template for small graphics (most commonly, button images) whose source file you're linking to, rather than embedding.
Use this template to include AVI formatted video whose source file you're linking to.
Use this template to include chunks of precoded HTML in your Web output - for example, JavaScript commands or form elements. The contents of the file are inserted in the page layout instructions of your Web outputs, without being interpreted by Author. The contents of the file are not included in your Printed and Help outputs.
Note: Deferred execution script elements that are normally included in the HEAD section of your page cannot be inserted by using a File object. These should be added to a custom HTML template.
