The Metadata plugin enhances Author by adding a panel to the editing view. Authors use this panel to assign variables to topics, and you can set up the panel to have features that aren't otherwise available. For example, changing the value of a variable based on the value of a different variable. The set up and behaviour of the metadata panel is specific to a topic template, so you can design a different panel for each template.
