Each output format requires external publishing templates that are stored outside of the Author-it library. For example, print output references a Word template and Web Help references an index.htm and custom cascading style sheet. These external publishing templates are applied to the publication during the publishing process to create the final, consistently formatted product. The purpose of these external publishing templates is to apply the final formatting and structure to the publication required by that particular output type to make it fully functional, such as adding headers and footers to a printed document or adding full text search functionality to Author-it Web Help.
