Create or modify header AutoText in Word 2010

Design templates, styles, & page layouts

Use the following steps when working in Word 2010. For details about working with headers, fields, and auto text in Word, refer to the Word user documentation.

To create a new header AutoText entry:

  1. Use Word to open your publishing template (Author-it.dot by default).
  2. Double-click in the header area to open the Design tab for headers and footers. Use the Insert Alignment tab to control the left, center, or right alignment for the content.
  3. Type the content for your header. Format the header exactly as you want it to appear in your finished document.
  4. Select the entire header and go to Insert > Quick Parts > AutoText > Save Selection to AutoText Gallery.

The Create New Building Block window opens.

  5. In the Create New Building Block window:
    • Give the header a name.
    • In the Save in drop-down list, select the template name.
    • Save your changes.
  6. Save the changes to the template.

Note: If the header entry is visible in your template, delete the header entry from the page before you save the template.

To modify a header AutoText entry:

  1. Use Word to open your publishing template (Author-it.dot by default).
  2. Go to Insert > Quick Parts > AutoText, and then scroll to the autotext entry you want to edit.
  3. Click the entry to open it in the template for editing.
  4. Make your changes to the header, including changes to fields or formatting.
  5. Select the entire header and go to Insert > Quick Parts > AutoText > Save Selection to AutoText Gallery.

The Create New Building Block window opens.

  6. In the Create New Building Block window, make sure the header name stays the same, otherwise a new building block entry gets created.
  7. Save the changes to the template.

Note: If the header entry is visible in your template, make sure you delete the header entry from the page before you save the template.
