Change the properties of a style object

Design templates, styles, & page layouts

A style that isn't quite right can be easily changed. We recommend that if you're working in a team, that only some people on the team be allowed to do this, in order to maintain control of your organization's standards. However, there is a small group of styles that need to retain their original Style object names.

Note: When you change a style, every place that it is used in your library is updated immediately. Make sure the change is appropriate in all situations. Sometimes, you need to first create a new style that is similar to the old one, by duplicating the existing style, and then modify the duplicated style.

To change a style:

  1. Close all topics using the style you're changing, or your changes cannot be saved.
  2. Locate and open the Style object you want to change.
  3. Change the style's settings:
    • The Style Definition tab controls how the style looks in Author's Editor. For paragraph styles, it also defines the outline level at which the style appears in your document.
    • The Help tab controls how the style looks in your Windows Help output.
    • The Web tab controls how the style appears in all Web output, including HTML Help.
    • The Print tab specifies the name of the style applied from the Word publishing template, but does not otherwise define any settings. The style settings for your printed output are defined in the template itself.

Note: To avoid errors in printed output, make sure that the type of style matches in Author and in Word.

  4. Save your changes. If you have made any changes to the settings in the Style Definition tab, then all topics using that style are updated, which may take a while.
