You can use an object in many places, which means that you will often need to know where an object is located in your library.

Note on Windows behavior when you Locate objects
When you have multiple Author windows open and select Locate from the primary window:

WindowsBehavior-Locate

The application may locate the object in a secondary window, which may be located behind other windows.

If your primary window is maximized when you select Locate, the software will minimize the primary window to enable you to see the secondary window.

To locate an object:

  1. Select the object in the Library Explorer, in a book's content pane, or in the Show Relationships window.
  2. Right-click the object, and then in the shortcut menu click Locate.The folder containing the object is selected in the Library Folders list, and the object is highlighted.

You can also locate an object that is used inside a topic. This can be a File object, Hyperlink object, or an embedded Topic object.

To locate an object used in a topic:

  1. Open the topic.
  2. Right-click the object in the topic content, and then select Locate. The folder containing the object is selected in the Library Folders list, and the object is highlighted.

Find an object in an open book

Use this option to find an object's location in an open book. This is useful when you want to quickly find a topic in a large book, or when content is organized by using a number of levels. You can also use this option to find any other objects that are added directly to the book contents pane. This option will not locate objects used inside topics.

To locate an object in an open Book:

  1. Open the book containing the object.
  2. Locate the object in the Library Explorer.
  3. Right-click the object in the list, and then click Locate in Open Book. The object is highlighted in the book's content pane.
