Book rules

Add and manage content

When you create a book structure you can add any of the objects you would usually use in a book.

The rules defining the number of times an object can be used in the book are also applied to the structure. The Create Rule menu is context sensitive, and the list of available rules is updated to reflect objects already added to the structure. For example, a book can only include one Table of Contents (TOC) object, so once a TOC object has been added to the book the option is removed from the rule menu.

Single use objects

You can include a single instance of each front and back matter object in the book.

  • Title Page
  • TOC (Table of Contents)
  • TOF (Table of Figures)
  • Glossary
  • Index

Rules for these objects have the number of occurrences set to 1, and the sequence set to Fixed. When you create the rules you can allow specific objects or templates (objects based directly on the template can be used).

Multiple use objects

You can include multiple instances of the following objects in the book.

  • Book (used to add sub books to the structure)
  • Topic
  • File object

When you create these rules you can allow specific objects or templates. When you allow an object the user must use the specified object in the book. When you allow templates you enable the users to add any existing content based on the template or create new content based on the template.

The following topics include examples of book structures with descriptions of the content requirements and the rules used in the structure builder. The sample books are intended to show how different types of content can be combined in a book structure, but do not necessarily represent real books or product guides. As a result, the rules you create may be different in combination, structure, and layout.
