Basic two-level book

Add and manage content

This example shows a book using a simple two level structure. Front and back matter and chapter topics are at the first level in the book's hierarchy, and the content topics are at level two. The topics used in the book are based on three templates - first chapter, chapter, and topic.

Content or style guide rules for the book

  • The book will be published to PDF so it must always include a title page and a table of contents.
  • The first chapter follows the table of contents. This chapter uses the First Chapter Template to ensure chapter numbering is set correctly.
  • The first chapter must be followed by at least one topic describing the product.
  • Additional chapters with detailed information are added after the first chapter. There must be at least one chapter with this type of information.
  • Each additional chapter must be followed by at least one topic.
  • The book must include an index, which is always found at the end of the document.

The structure

The book's structure builder is used to create both the rules and the object hierarchy applied in the book. The hierarchy is created by moving to different levels using the promote and demote options. When you create the parent/child structure you are creating a relationship between those objects.

  • When you use Flexible rules the "relationship" means objects from one group cannot be used in a different parent/child group.
  • You can make the group optional or mandatory by setting the occurrence level for the parent object.

Basic Two Level Structure

  • Rule 1: Title Page Rule

One title page object must be added to the book. Location sequence is Fixed - must be added as first object in the book. Allowed object - Standard Title Page object.

  • Rule 2: Table of Contents Rule

One table of contents object must be added to the book. Location sequence is Fixed - must be added directly after the title page. Allowed object - Standard Table of Contents object.

  • Rule 3: First Chapter Rule

One chapter must be added to the book directly after the Table of Contents. Location sequence is Fixed - must be added directly after the table of contents. Allowed object - the topic must be based on the First Chapter template.

  • Rule 4: Topic Rule 1 (for the first chapter content)

At least one topic must be added after the First Chapter topic. The topic content must be demoted to create a parent/child relationship in the book's content pane. No maximum limit has been defined for the topics belonging to the first chapter.

  • Rule 5: Additional Chapters Rule

At least one additional chapter must be added to the book after the first chapter. The Chapter template must be used. No maximum limit has been defined for the topics creating the additional chapters.

  • Rule 6: Topic Rule 2 (for the additional chapters)

At least one topic must be added to each additional chapter. The topic content must be demoted to create a parent/child relationship in the book's content pane. No maximum limit has been defined for the number of topics belonging to each of the additional chapters.

  • Rule 7: Index Rule

One Index must be added to the book, and must be added as the last object in the book's content pane. The Standard Index object must be used.

The book

The following book, with three chapters, was created using the basic two level structure. The book shows where the rules were used.

Rules in Basic Two Level Book

  • The front and back matter objects were added in the order shown in the structure.
  • The opening chapter uses the "First Chapter Rule". Child topics added to the first chapter are based on "Topic Rule 1".
  • Two additional chapters were created using the "Chapter Rule". Chapters two and three have topics based on "Topic Rule 2".
