Publishing changes after installing the Multi-Variant Publishing plugin - Author-it On-Premises

Author-it Plugins Guide

Installing the Multi-Variant Publishing plugin changes the way that Author-it On-Premises overwrites published outputs and the structure of publishing folders. These changes may cause after publishing commands or custom configurations to stop working. Before installing this plugin, we recommend reviewing these changes to see how they may affect your organization.

Before installing the Multi-Variant Publishing plugin

  • Author-it On-Premises creates one publishing folder per book and publishing profile. If you publish a book to PDF ProCSS twice, the published outputs will be sent to the same folder. The second published output will replace the first.

  • Publishing folders use the following naming convention. Each value is taken from the publishing job that created the folder:

    • [Publishing profile description]/[Book Description]/[Locale description]

For example: PDF ProCSS/ACME User Manual/English (United States)

After installing the Multi-Variant Publishing plugin

  • Author-it On-Premises creates one publishing folder per book, publishing profile, and variant criteria. If you publish a book to PDF ProCSS twice and select the same variant-criteria values for both publishing jobs, the published outputs will be sent to the same folder. The second published output will replace the first. If you select different variant-criteria values for each publishing job, Author-it On-Premises will send the outputs to separate folders. Both outputs will remain accessible.

These changes make it possible to create merged PDFs, but increase the amount of published outputs being retained and stored. Organizations that use Author-it On-Premises may need to review the storage requirements of their publishing folders, or the frequency with which old published outputs are deleted.

  • Publishing folders use a modified naming convention. Some changes are required, others are configurable by Author-it Support. Author-it Support will discuss which options to use with you, based on your organization's needs and the length of your publishing file paths.

    • [Publishing profile description]: Optionally changed to [Publishing profile code]

    • [Book description]: Optionally changed to [Book code]

    • [Locale description]: Changed to [Locale code]

    • [Variant-criteria value]: Optionally added after [Locale code]. Author-it Support can configure the maximum number of variant-criteria values that will appear.

    • [Unique code]: Added to the end of the folder name when a publishing job exceeds the maximum number of variant-criteria values. For example, if your publishing folders have been configured to include zero variant-criteria values, and a publishing job is assigned one or more variant-criteria values, the unique code will appear after [Locale code]. This ensures each published output uses a unique folder, even when publishing jobs have similar variant-criteria values.

  • Examples of possible publishing folder name conventions after installing the plugin:

    • [Publishing profile description]/[Book Description]/[Locale code]-[Variant-criteria value 1]-[Variant-criteria value 2]-[Variant-criteria value3]-[Unique code]:

      PDF ProCSS/ACME User Manual/en-us-X1000-Print-gh12k88p

    • [Publishing profile code]/[Book code]/[Locale code]-[Unique code]:

      8736/1001/en-us-gh12k88p
